I’ve often thought about how consumers are able to grasp the value of a tomato being organic because the supply chain is easily understood. It’s fairly easy to think about planting a seed, watering the soil, not using pesticides, the plant growing, picking the tomato, and then eating it. Of course the industry around it is complex and huge, the concept of the process is something we can see and understand. On the other hand, the supply chain of creating a garment is not only vastly more complicated and secretive but on top of that consumers are incredibly removed from what it takes to create clothing these days. It’s not only consumers though, as designers, merchandisers, influencers, and other major people in the fashion industry truly have no idea what goes into making a clothing item and how important it is. (shocking but true!)
